Dismissal

Dismissal from the Program

Graduate Bylaws (Resolution 7493/2018)

The USP Graduate Bylaws establish the situations in which a student may be dismissed from the program. Dismissal is an administrative measure that formally terminates the student’s enrollment in the graduate program.

Reasons for Dismissal (Art. 49):

The student will be dismissed from the program in the following situations:

ReasonDescription
Course failures2 failures in the same course or 3 failures in different courses
Absence of enrollmentFailure to enroll in 2 consecutive academic periods
QualificationFailure to pass the qualifying examination within established deadlines
Non-compliance with requirementsFailure to fulfill activities or requirements set forth in the regulation
Voluntary requestThe student may request their own dismissal
Unsatisfactory performanceAcademic and scientific performance deemed unsatisfactory

New Enrollment after Dismissal:

A student who was dismissed and wishes to return to the program must:

  1. Be approved in a new selection process (there is no automatic readmission)
  2. Fulfill all requirements applicable to incoming candidates
  3. Credits obtained in the last 36 months may be recognized, at the discretion of the new advisor and the CCP

Consequence of Dismissal:

  • The dismissed student receives a certificate of completion for courses in which they passed
  • No diploma or degree is conferred
  • The student’s record remains in the university’s files

Reasons for Dismissal in the Chemistry Program

Program Regulation 2026

In addition to the rules established in the USP Graduate Bylaws, the Chemistry Program defines additional situations that may result in dismissal. These rules aim to ensure adequate monitoring of academic progress.

Situations that result in dismissal:

SituationDeadline/Limit
Failure to submit research plan60 days after first enrollment
Failure to submit annual reportsWithin established deadlines
Absence of enrollment2 consecutive academic periods
Failure in the same course2 failures
Failures in different courses3 failures
Failure in qualification2 failures
Report rejection2 consecutive rejections
Unsatisfactory performanceUpon reasoned opinion

Unsatisfactory Academic Performance:

Dismissal for unsatisfactory performance requires:

  1. Justified statement from the advisor
  2. Detailed opinion from a rapporteur appointed by the CCP
  3. Final deliberation by the CCP

This procedure ensures that the student has the opportunity to know the reasons and respond before the decision.

Program Regulation 2020

The student may be dismissed from the graduate program, in any of the programs, if one of the following situations occurs:

SituationDescription
Course failures2 failures in the same course or 3 failures in different courses
Absence of enrollment2 consecutive academic periods without enrollment
Failure in qualificationFailure in the qualifying examination 2 times
Qualification deadlineFailure to take the qualifying examination within the deadline
Unsatisfactory performanceAs assessed by the CCP, upon detailed opinion

Performance Assessment (Regulation 2020):

The student will be monitored by a rapporteur — a Full Advisor of the Program appointed by the CCP. The assessment of academic and scientific performance will be conducted through:

  • Mandatory annual report
  • Rapporteur’s opinion
  • CCP analysis

The assessment may result in specific guidance for course correction or, in cases of persistently unsatisfactory performance, dismissal from the program.

Academic Performance Assessment

Program Regulation 2026

The Chemistry Program maintains a continuous monitoring system to assess each student’s progress. This system allows early identification of difficulties and provides support when needed.

Monitoring by Assessor

Students are monitored throughout the program by an assessor, a faculty member holding a Doctoral degree who follows the project’s development.

Nomination process:

  1. The advisor prepares a list of possible assessors
  2. The student expresses their agreement
  3. The CCP appoints the assessor
  4. Deadline: The nomination must occur within 6 months after first enrollment

Role of the assessor:

  • Monitor the development of the research project
  • Evaluate annual reports
  • Offer external perspective on the work
  • Contribute to the student’s training

Research Plan

Program Regulation 2026

The research plan is the first formal document that the student must submit after admission. It establishes the foundations of the project to be developed during the program.

Deadline: Up to 60 days after first enrollment

Required structure:

SectionContent
AbstractProject summary in up to 300 words
IntroductionTopic contextualization and state of the art
RationaleWhy this project is relevant
ObjectivesWhat is intended to be achieved (general and specific)
Work planActivities to be developed
TimelineTemporal distribution of activities
Materials and methodsMethodological approach and necessary resources
BibliographyReferences that support the project

Formatting:

  • Up to 20 pages
  • Double-spaced text

Consequence of non-submission: Failure to submit the research plan within the deadline results in dismissal from the program.

Annual Reports

Program Regulation 2026

Annual reports are instruments for monitoring student progress. They allow assessment of whether the project is developing as planned and identification of any difficulties.

Frequency: Annual, according to deadlines set by the CCP or the funding agency

Report structure:

SectionLengthContent
Project summary1 pageUpdated synthesis of the research project
Activities performedup to 10 pagesDescription of activities and goal achievement
Future planningup to 2 pagesPlanned activities or replanning
Advisor evaluationAdvisor’s opinion on performance

Alternative format: Students with scholarships may submit the report in the format required by the funding agency (FAPESP, CAPES, CNPq), as long as it contains the essential information.

Report Rejection

If the report is rejected by the assessor:

  1. The student must submit a new report within 30 days after the result is announced
  2. The new report must incorporate the recommendations and corrections indicated
  3. Two consecutive rejections result in dismissal from the program

Course Completion Certificate

Graduate Bylaws (Resolution 7493/2018)

A student who is dismissed from the program, for any reason, is entitled to receive a certificate stating:

  • The courses completed with passing grades
  • The grades obtained in each course
  • The credit hours completed

This certificate may be useful for:

  • Demonstrating additional training in selection processes
  • Requesting credit recognition in other programs
  • Documenting academic experience in graduate studies

Important: The certificate is not equivalent to a diploma and does not confer an academic degree.
