Dissertation and Thesis Deposit

Graduate Studies Bylaws (Res. 7493/2018)

The Bylaws establish general rules for depositing the final graduate work:

Procedure:

  • Deposit may be done in print and/or digital format, as defined by the Unit
  • Requires advisor consent
  • Without advisor consent, the student may request judgment by the CCP and CPG

Requirements for degree:

  • Master’s: dissertation demonstrating capacity for systematization and mastery of the topic, with personal contribution to the field
  • Doctorate: thesis representing original contribution to knowledge in the research area

Work access:

  • The dissertation or thesis is available at the Unit Library and USP Digital Library
  • Confidentiality: The work may be kept in reserved collection for up to 2 years, renewable once, for intellectual property protection or other justified reasons

Deposit Procedures

The deposit of the dissertation or thesis must be done by the candidate through the USP Graduate Studies corporate system. The deposit must occur:

  • By the last day of the statutory deadline
  • Preferably by the end of business hours at the Graduate Studies Service

Format (Regulation 2020)

Master’s Dissertation: Only in traditional form (monograph).

Doctoral Thesis: May be presented in traditional form or as article collection. In case of collection, must have at least two articles published and/or submitted, with at least one published or in press. Articles must have been submitted after program admission and there cannot be copyright violation.

The work must contain title, abstract and keywords in Portuguese and English.

Languages (Regulation 2020)

Dissertations and theses may be written and defended in Portuguese or English. They may also be written in Spanish, upon advisor request and CCP approval.

Master’s Dissertation Format

The Master’s final work is a Dissertation, which may be presented in traditional form or as article collection.

Mandatory Structure (both forms)

  • Cover: author name, work title, location and date
  • Title page: Unit name, author name, title, advisor name, location and date
  • Title, abstract and keywords: in Portuguese AND English

Requirements for article collection:

  • Articles must have been submitted after the student’s program admission
  • Must be related to the research project
  • Must ensure no copyright violation

Doctoral Thesis Format

The Doctorate and Direct Doctorate final work is a Thesis, which may be presented in traditional form or as article collection, with the same structure as Dissertations.

Permitted Languages

Main languages:

  • Dissertations and theses may be written and defended in Portuguese or English

Article collection:

  • May be written partially in Portuguese and partially in English (articles in different languages)

Other languages:

  • Other languages may be authorized upon advisor request and CCP approval

Mandatory requirement: Regardless of the main language, all dissertations and theses must contain title, abstract and keywords in Portuguese AND English, according to USP Graduate Studies Bylaws.

Standards and Models

Formatting

The dissertation or thesis must follow the standards of the USP Digital Theses and Dissertations Library.

The Program provides models to facilitate formatting. Contact the Graduate Studies Secretariat to obtain updated models.

The Institute of Chemistry Library offers in-person and remote assistance for guidance on standards, formatting and deposit.

Mandatory General Audience Summary Page

New

All dissertations and theses must include a specific page containing:

  1. General audience summary: Explanation of the work in language accessible to non-specialized public
  2. Potential impact for society: How the work may benefit society
  3. Derived publications: List of articles, patents or other publications originated from the research, with proper affiliation and acknowledgments

This page aims to increase visibility and social impact of research produced in the Program.

Degree

After defense approval and CPG ratification, the student receives the corresponding degree:

The diploma is issued by the University of São Paulo and records the program in which the degree was obtained.
